RESUMEN

Whether trace metals modify breast density, the strongest predictor for breast cancer, during critical developmental stages such as puberty remains understudied. Our study prospectively evaluated the association between trace metals at Tanner breast stage B1 (n = 291) and at stages both B1 and B4 (n = 253) and breast density at 2 years post-menarche among Chilean girls from the Growth and Obesity Cohort Study. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry assessed the volume of dense breast tissue (absolute fibroglandular volume [FGV]) and percent breast density (%FGV). Urine trace metals included arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, copper, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, antimony, selenium, tin, thallium, vanadium, and zinc. At B1, a doubling of thallium concentration resulted in 13.69 cm3 increase in absolute FGV (ß: 13.69, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.81, 24.52), while a doubling of lead concentration resulted in a 7.76 cm3 decrease in absolute FGV (ß: -7.76, 95%CI: -14.71, -0.73). At B4, a doubling of barium concentration was associated with a 10.06 cm3 increase (ß: 10.06, 95% CI: 1.44, 18.60), copper concentration with a 12.29 cm3 increase (ß: 12.29, 95% CI: 2.78, 21.56), lead concentration with a 9.86 cm3 increase (ß: 9.86, 95% CI: 0.73, 18.98), antimony concentration with a 12.97 cm3 increase (ß: 12.97, 95% CI: 1.98, 23.79) and vanadium concentration with a 13.14 cm3 increase in absolute FGV (ß: 13.14, 95% CI: 2.73, 23.58). Trace metals may affect pubertal breast density at varying developmental stages with implications for increased susceptibility for breast cancer.

The early growth stage of plants is vital to community diversity and community regeneration. The Janzen-Connell hypothesis predicts that conspecific density dependence lowers the survival of conspecific seedlings by attracting specialist natural enemies, promoting the recruitment and performance of heterospecific neighbors. Recent work has underscored how this conspecific negative density dependence may be mediated by mutualists - such as how mycorrhizal fungi may mediate the accrual of host-specific pathogens beneath the crown of conspecific adult trees. Aboveground mutualist and enemy interactions exist as well, however, and may provide useful insight into density dependence that are as of yet unexplored. Using a long-term seedling demographic dataset in a subtropical forest plot in central China, we confirmed that conspecific neighborhoods had a significant negative effect on seedling survival in this subtropical forest. Furthermore, although we detected more leaf damage in species that were closely related to ants, we found that the presence of ants had significant positive effects on seedling survival. Beside this, we also found a negative effect of ant appearance on seedling growth which may reflect a trade-off between survival and growth. Overall, our findings suggested that ants and conspecific neighborhoods played important but inverse roles on seedling survival and growth. Our results suggest ants may mediate the influence of conspecific negative density dependence on seedling survival at community level.

Peatland restoration usually aims at restarting the peatlands' function to store carbon within peat. The soil properties of the near-surface peat can give a first understanding of this process. Therefore, we sampled pH value, total organic carbon content (TOC), total nitrogen content (TN), C/N ratio as well as dry bulk density (BD), and describe the structure of near-surface peats in six restored fens in North-East Germany before (2002-2004) and after (2019-2021) restoration. Before restoration, the study sites showed peat degradation to various extents in their near-surface peats. pH values remained relatively stable over time. Comparing the degraded peat horizons, TOC increased significantly in four study sites, ranging from 35.7% to 47.8% in 2002-2004 and from 42.5% to 54.0% in 2019-2021. TN varied from 1.5% to 3.5% in 2002-2004 and from 1.8% to 3.2% in 2019-2021, but changes were only significant in one site, showing a slight decrease. In three sites, the increase in C/N ratio was significant, indicating lower nutrient availability. BD ranged from 0.08 to 0.48 g/cm3 in 2002-2004 and from 0.10 to 0.16 g/cm3 in 2019-2021, decreasing significantly in four sites. The structure of the degraded peat horizons changed after restoration to a more homogenous, sludge mass with larger re-aggregates. In three sites, new peat moss peat layers above the degraded soil horizon were present in 2019-2021, with a mean thickness of 6.8 to 36.1 cm. The structure was comparable to typical, slightly decomposed peat moss peat. Our findings suggest that within about 17 years after fen restoration, and thereby a water table rise close to surface, TOC of the near-surface peats increased to values that are typical for undisturbed peatlands. This indicates that restoration can lead to the re-establishment of peatlands as potential carbon sinks, with TOC within the near-surface peat as one key factor in this process. Further, we assume that the decrease in nutrient availability, decrease of BD, and new, undisturbed peat layers can favor the establishment of mire-specific biodiversity and support ecosystem services similar to near-natural mires.

PURPOSE: The number of women living with breast cancer (BC) is increasing, and the efficacy of surveillance programs after BC treatment is essential. Identification of links between mammographic features and recurrence could help design follow up strategies, which may lead to earlier detection of recurrence. The aim of this study was to analyze associations between mammographic features at diagnosis and their potential association with recurrence-free survival (RFS). METHODS: Women with invasive BC in the prospective Malmö Diet and Cancer Study (n = 1116, 1991-2014) were assessed for locoregional and distant recurrences, with a median follow-up of 10.15 years. Of these, 34 women were excluded due to metastatic disease at diagnosis or missing recurrence data. Mammographic features (breast density [BI-RADS and clinical routine], tumor appearance, mode of detection) and tumor characteristics (tumor size, axillary lymph node involvement, histological grade) at diagnosis were registered. Associations were analyzed using Cox regression, yielding hazard ratios (HR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Of the 1082 women, 265 (24.4 %) had recurrent disease. There was an association between high mammographic breast density at diagnosis and impaired RFS (adjusted HR 1.32 (0.98-1.79). In analyses limited to screen-detected BC, this association was stronger (adjusted HR 2.12 (1.35-3.32). There was no association between mammographic tumor appearance and recurrence. CONCLUSION: RFS was impaired in women with high breast density compared to those with low density, especially among women with screen-detected BC. This study may lead to insights on mammographic features preceding BC recurrence, which could be used to tailor follow up strategies.

The possibility of laser isotope separation of 175Yb from irradiated natural Yb has been investigated. The optimum process parameters such as powers and bandwidths of the lasers, Doppler broadening and the number density of the atoms have been derived through density matrix calculations. It has been shown that it is possible to produce 175Yb (>42% enriched) at a production rate of 62 µg/hour (or 1.5 mg/day). This corresponds to the production rate of 1350 patient doses (of 7.4 GBq each) per day. The radionuclidic purity of the isotopic mixture is expected to be 99.9999%. The method is highly suitable for the countries having only low-flux nuclear reactors.

In this study, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction on bismuth vanadium/cadmium sulfide (BiVO4/0.6CdS) was developed and evaluated for simultaneous photocatalytic removal of combined tetracycline (TC) and hexavalent chromium Cr(Ⅵ) pollution under visible light. Based on the analysis of intermediate products and theoretical calculation, the property of the intermediate products of TC degradation and the effect of built-in electric field (IEF) of composite materials on photo-generated carrier separation were illustrated. According to the experiments and evaluation results, the performance of BiVO4/0.6CdS is higher than CdS 2.83 times and 4.82 times under the visible light conditions, with the aspect of simultaneous oxidizing TC and reducing Cr(Ⅵ), respectively. The catalyst has a faster removal rate in the binary composite pollution system than the single one. Therefore, the photocatalytic degradation of TC using BiVO4/0.6CdS can reduce the toxic effect of TC on the environment. The aforementioned evaluation provides a new design strategy for Z-scheme heterojunction to simultaneous photocatalytic degradation of composite organic and inorganic pollutants.

Municipal effluents discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are a considerable source of microplastics in the environment. The dynamic profiles of microplastics in treatment units in WWTPs with different treatment processes remain unclear. This study quantitatively analyzed microplastics in wastewater samples collected from different treatment units in two tertiary treatment plants with distinct processes. The influents contained an average of 15.5 ±â€¯3.5 particles/L and 38.5 ±â€¯2.5 particles/L in the two WWTPs with in the oxidation ditch process and the integrated fixed-film activated sludge process, respectively. Interestingly, microplastic concentrations in the influent were more influenced by the population density in the served area than sewage volume or served population equivalent. Throughout the treatment process, concentrations were reduced to 1.5 ±â€¯0.5 particles/L and 1.0 ±â€¯1.0 particles/L in the final effluents, representing an overall decrease of 90 % and 97 %, in WWTPs with the oxidation ditch process and integrated fixed-film activated sludge process, respectively. A significant proportion of the microplastics were removed during the primary treatment stage in both WWTPs, with better performance for foam, film, line-shaped and large-sized microplastics. Most microplastics were accumulated in activated sludge, indicating its key role as the primary sink in WWTPs. The multiple correspondence analysis identified laundry washing and daily necessities such as packaging and containers as the major contributors to microplastics in WWTPs. The study proposed recommendations for upgrading WWTPs, modifying designs, and implementing strategies to reduce microplastic sources, aiming to minimize the release of microplastics into the environment. These findings can shed lights on the sources of microplastics in WWTPs, and advance our understanding of the mechanisms for more effective microplastic removals in wastewater treatment technologies in future applications.

The field of biofabrication is rapidly expanding with the advent of new technologies and material systems to engineer complex tissues. In this opinion article, we introduce an emerging tissue patterning method, physical-property-based patterning, that has strong translational potential given its simplicity and limited dependence on external hardware. Physical-property-based patterning relies solely on the intrinsic density, magnetic susceptibility, or compressibility of an object, its surrounding solution, and the noncontact application of a remote field. We discuss how physical properties can be exploited to pattern objects and design a variety of biologic tissues. Finally, we pose several open questions that, if addressed, could transform the status quo of biofabrication, pushing us one step closer to patterning tissues in situ.

Water oxidation is a crucial reaction in the artificial photosynthesis system. In the present work, density functional calculations were employed to decipher the mechanism of water oxidation catalyzed by a binuclear cobalt complex, which was disclosed to be a homogeneous water oxidation catalyst in pH=7 phosphate buffer. The calculations showed that the catalytic cycle starts from the CoIII,III-OH2 species. Then, a proton-coupled electron transfer followed by a one-electron transfer process leads to the generation of the formal CoIV,IV-OH intermediate. The subsequent PCET produces the active species, namely the formal CoIV,V=O intermediate (4). The oxidation processes mainly occur on the ligand moiety, including the coordinated water moiety, implying a redox non-innocent behavior. Two cobalt centers keep their oxidation states and provide one catalytic center for water activation during the oxidation process. 4 triggers the O-O bond formation via the water nucleophilic attack pathway, in which the phosphate buffer ion functions as the proton acceptor. The O-O bond formation is the rate-limiting step with a calculated total barrier of 17.7 kcal/mol. The last electron oxidation process coupled with an intramolecular electron transfer results in the generation of O2.

The continued interest in 2D carbon allotropes stems from their unique structural and electronic characteristics, which are crucial for diverse applications. This work theoretically introduces PHOTH-Graphene (PHOTH-G), a novel 2D planar carbon allotrope formed by 4-5-6-7-8 carbon rings. PHOTH-G emerges as a narrow band gap semiconducting material with low formation energy, demonstrating good stability under thermal and mechanical conditions. This material has slight mechanical anisotropy with Young modulus and Poisson ratios varying between 7.08-167.8 GPa and 0.21-0.96. PHOTH-G presents optical activity restricted to the visible range. Li atoms adsorbed on its surface have a migration barrier averaging 0.38 eV.

Background: The contribution of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) subclasses to incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) remains a subject of debate. Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate these associations in a population with a high prevalence of dyslipidemia and CVD. Methods: In a nested case-control study, HDL-C and its subclasses (HDL2-C and HDL3-C) in 370 age and gender-matched case and control subjects were determined. This study employed multivariable-adjusted conditional logistic regression to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) for the associations between HDL-C, HDL2-C, HDL3-C, and HDL2-C/HDL3-C (both as continuous and categorical variables) with incident CVD and CHD. The present study models were adjusted for a comprehensive set of confounders, including body mass index, current smoking, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, use of lipid-lowering drugs, family history of premature CVD, non-HDL-C, and triglycerides. Results: In multivariate analysis, when considering lipoprotein parameters as continuous variables, a 1-unit increase in HDL-C and HDL3-C was associated with a reduced risk of incident CVD and CHD. For CVD, the ORs (95% confidence intervals [CI]) were 0.95 (0.92 - 0.98) and 0.95 (0.93 - 0.98) for HDL-C and HDL3-C, respectively. The corresponding values for CHD were 0.94 (0.91 - 0.97) and 0.94 (0.91 - 0.97). In the categorical approach to lipoprotein parameters, higher quartiles of HDL-C and HDL3-C, compared to the first quartile, were significantly associated with a lower risk of incident CVD and CHD. The ORs (95% CI) for the fourth quartiles were 0.43 (0.25 - 0.74, P for trend = 0.003) and 0.46 (0.27 - 0.78, P for trend = 0.005) for HDL-C and HDL3-C regarding CVD and 0.32 (0.17 - 0.59) and 0.32 (0.18 - 0.59) (all P for trend = 0.001) regarding CHD, respectively. Paradoxically, across quartiles of HDL2-C/HDL3-C, this lipid ratio was associated with a higher risk of CHD (92% higher risk in the fourth quartile). Conclusions: The results showed that HDL3-C, but not HDL2-C, was primarily responsible for the protective effect of HDL-C against CVD, particularly CHD, in Iranian adults.

Emerging evidence indicates a complex interplay between skeletal muscle and cognitive function. Despite the known differences between muscle quantity and quality, which can be measured via computed tomography (CT), the precise nature of their associations with cognitive performance remain underexplored. To investigate the links between muscle size and density and cognitive impairment (CI) in the older adults with hip fractures, we conducted a post hoc, cross-sectional analysis within a prospective cohort study on 679 patients with hip fractures over 65. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and routine hip CT imaging were utilized to assess cognition function and muscle characteristics in older adults with hip fractures. The CT scans provided data on cross-sectional area and attenuation for the gluteus maximus (G.MaxM) and the combined gluteus medius and minimus (G.Med/MinM). Participants were categorized into CI and non-CI groups based on education levels and MMSE scores. Multivariate logistic regressions, propensity score (PS) methods, and subgroup analysis were employed to analyze associations and validate findings. This study included 123 participants (81.6 ± 6.8 years, 74% female) with CI and 556 participants (78.5 ± 7.7 years, 72% female) without. Compared to the non-CI group, muscle parameters, especially density, were significantly lower in the CI group. Specifically, G.Med/Min muscle density, but not size was robustly associated with CI (odds ratio (OR) = 0.77, 95% confidence interval = 0.62-0.96, P = 0.02), independent of other medical situations. Sensitivity analysis corroborated that G.Med/Min muscle density was consistently lower in the CI group than the non-CI group, as evidenced in the PS matched (P = 0.024) and weighted cohort (P = 0.033). Enhanced muscle parameters, particularly muscle density in the G.Med/MinM muscle, correlate with a lower risk of CI. Muscle density demonstrates a stronger association with cognitive performance than muscle size, highlighting its potential as a key focus in future cognitive health research.

In an aging society, addressing the risks and management of osteoporotic fractures is critical to reduce mortality. Similarly, the morbidity of chronic kidney disease and myelodysplastic syndrome increases with aging. The association between chronic kidney disease and fractures is well understood; however, recent reports have indicated an increased risk of incident osteoporosis in patients with prevalent myelodysplastic syndrome. In this case report, we present an older man with stage 4 chronic kidney disease complicated by myelodysplastic syndrome and progressive decline in bone mineral density. He was treated with methenolone acetate and darbepoetin for anemia caused by myelodysplastic syndrome. During anemia treatment, the decline in bone mineral density was attenuated overtime. The case findings suggest the potential association between the use of methenolone acetate as a synthetic anabolic steroid and attenuated decline in bone mineral density.

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index are novel indexes for insulin resistance (IR). We aimed to evaluate associations of TG/HDL-C and TyG with arterial stiffness risk. METHODS: We enrolled 1979 participants from the Rural Chinese Cohort Study, examining arterial stiffness by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Logistic and linear regression models were employed to calculate effect estimates. For meta-analysis, we searched relevant articles from PubMed, Embase and Web of Science up to August 26, 2023. The fixed-effects or random-effects models were used to calculate the pooled estimates. We evaluated dose-response associations using restricted cubic splines. RESULTS: For cross-sectional studies, the adjusted ORs (95%CIs) for arterial stiffness were 1.12 (1.01-1.23) and 1.78 (1.38-2.30) for per 1 unit increment in TG/HDL-C and TyG. In the meta-analysis, the pooled ORs (95% CIs) were 1.26 (1.14-1.39) and 1.57 (1.36-1.82) for per 1 unit increment of TG/HDL-C and TyG. Additionally, both TG/HDL-C and TyG were positively related to PWV, with ß of 0.09 (95% CI 0.04-0.14) and 0.57 (95% CI 0.35-0.78) m/s. We also found linear associations of TG/HDL-C and TyG with arterial stiffness risk. CONCLUSIONS: High TG/HDL-C and TyG were related to increased arterial stiffness risk, indicating TG/HDL-C and TyG may be convincing predictors of arterial stiffness.

INTRODUCTION: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare genetic disease caused by loss-of-function mutations in the ALPL gene encoding the tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Mild HPP is usually misdiagnosed in adult age. While an elevated serum ALP value draws more attention than a low value, low serum ALP should be better recognised and may lead to HPP detection. METHODS: Patients were selected from the records of the biochemistry department of six University Hospitals in France. Patients were hospitalised in the departments of rheumatology and internal medicine between 2007 and 2017. RESULTS: 56 321 hospitalised patients had at least 2 serum ALP dosages and 664 of these patients had at least 2 low serum ALP≤35 UI/L. Among these 664 patients, 482 (72.6%) had fluctuating low values (mean age 62.9 years; 60% of women) and 182 patients (27.4%) had persistent low values below 35 IU/L (mean age 53.4 years; 67% of women). Among patients with persistent hypophosphatasaemia treated with bisphosphonates, 70.8% never had ALP measurement before treatment and 20.8% were treated despite an abnormal decrease of ALP. Genetic testing was performed in 18 patients and was positive in 11. Genetic diagnosis of HPP was at least 6.0% in persistent hypophosphatasaemia and at least 15.9% in patients with at least three symptoms suggestive of HPP. CONCLUSION: In this 10-year retrospective study, 0.32% of adult patients hospitalised in the rheumatology and internal medicine departments had persistently low serum ALP, and among them, 6% had genetically proven HPP. Reported hypophosphatasaemia represented only 3.6% of hospitalised patients.

Modulating interlayer coupling modes can effectively enhance the thermoelectric properties of nanomaterials or nanoscale devices. By using density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function method, we investigate the thermoelectric properties of zigzag-type black arsenic nanoscale devices with varying interlayer coupling modes. Our results show that altering the interlayer coupling mode significantly modulates the thermoelectric properties of the system. Specifically, we consider four coupling modes with different strengths, by modulating different interlayer overlap patterns. Notably, in the weaker interlayer coupling mode, the system exhibits enhanced thermoelectric properties due to increased interface phonon scattering, for example, the M4reaching a peak value of 2.23 atµ= -0.73 eV. Furthermore, we explore the temperature-dependent behavior of each coupling model. The results suggest that the thermoelectric characteristics are more sensitive to temperature variations in the weaker coupling modes. These insights provide valuable guidance for enhancing the thermoelectric performance of nanoscale devices through precise interlayer coupling modulation.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of low femoral and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) in adults with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC). We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of adults with AMC who were enrolled in the French Reference Center for AMC and in the Pediatric and Adult Registry for Arthrogryposis (PARART, NCT05673265). Patients who had undergone dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and/or vitamin D testing were included in the analysis. Fifty-one patients (mean age, 32.9 ± 12.6 years) were included; 46 had undergone DXA. Thirty-two (32/51, 62.7%) patients had Amyoplasia, and 19 (19/51, 37.3%) had other types of AMC (18 distal arthrogryposis, 1 Larsen). Six patients (6/42, 14.3%) had a lumbar BMD Z score less than - 2. The mean lumbar spine Z score (- 0.03 ± 1.6) was not significantly lower than the expected BMD Z score in the general population. Nine (9/40, 22.5%) and 10 (10/40, 25.0%) patients had femoral neck and total hip BMD Z scores less than - 2, respectively. The mean femoral neck (- 1.1 ± 1.1) and total hip (- 1.2 ± 1.2) BMD Z scores in patients with AMC were significantly lower than expected in the general population (p < 0.001). Femoral neck BMD correlated with height (rs = 0.39, p = 0.01), age (rs = - 0.315, p = 0.48); total hip BMD correlated with height (rs = 0.331, p = 0.04) and calcium levels (rs = 0.41, p = 0.04). Twenty-five patients (25/51, 49.0%) reported 39 fractures. Thirty-one (31/36, 86.1%) patients had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels less than 75 nmol/l, and 6 (6/36, 16.7%) had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels less than 75 nmol/l. Adults with AMC had lower hip BMD than expected for their age, and they more frequently showed vitamin D insufficiency. Screening for low BMD by DXA and adding vitamin D supplementation when vitamin D status is insufficient should be considered in adults with AMC, especially if there is a history of falls or fractures.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the optimal placement of miniscrews, this study compared adult male and female patients in terms of cortical bone density, cortical bone thickness, and available bone width in the infrazygomatic crest region. METHODS: The cone beam computed tomography imaging data of 200 patients (20-30 years old; 100 males and 100 females) were collected. The right maxillary posterior teeth in the sagittal plane were divided into six levels from proximal to distal, and three measurement sites were positioned at vertical distances of 8, 10, and 12 mm from the cementum. Cortical bone density, cortical bone thickness, and available bone width were measured in 18 measurement sites in the infrazygomatic crest and analyzed statistically. RESULTS: The highest cortical bone density, cortical bone thickness, and available bone width in the infrazygomatic crest in adult male and female patients were at the level of the interradicular space between the maxillary second premolar and maxillary first molar. The bone cortical density and thickness increased with vertical height, whereas the available bone width decreased with increasing vertical height. Differences were observed in cortical bone density, cortical bone thickness, and available bone width between adult male and female patients. CONCLUSIONS: The optimal implantation sites of the micro-implant anchorages in the infrazygomatic crest were at the level of the interradicular space between the maxillary second premolar and the maxillary first molar, and the vertical height of the optimal implantation site in males was appropriately higher than that in females.

Land transportation is a major source of heavy metal contamination along the roadside, posing significant risks to human health through inhalation, oral ingestion, and dermal contact. Therefore, this study has been designed to determine the concentrations of vehicular released heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni, and Cu) in roadside soil and leaves of two commonly growing native plant species (Calotropis procera and Nerium oleander).Two busy roads i.e., Lahore-Okara road (N-5) and Okara-Faisalabad roads (OFR) in Punjab, Pakistan, were selected for the study. The data were collected from five sites along each road during four seasons. Control samples were collected ~ 50 m away from road. The metal content i.e. lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu) were determined in the plant leaves and soil by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Significantly high amount of all studied heavy metals were observed in soil and plant leaves along both roads in contrast to control ones. The mean concentration of metals in soil ranged as Cd (2.20-6.83 mg/kg), Pb (4.53-15.29 mg/kg), Ni (29.78-101.26 mg/kg), and Cu (61.68-138.46 mg/kg) and in plant leaves Cd (0.093-0.53 mg/kg), Pb (4.31-16.34 mg/kg), Ni (4.13-16.34 mg/kg) and Cu (2.98-32.74 mg/kg). Among roads, higher metal contamination was noted along N-5 road. Significant temporal variations were also noted in metal contamination along both roads. The order of metal contamination in soil and plant leaves in different seasons was summer > autumn > spring > winter. Furthermore, the metal accumulation potential of Calotropis procera was higher than that of Nerium oleander. Therefore, for sustainable management of metal contamination, the plantation of Calotropis procera is recommended along roadsides.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is a progressive systemic skeletal disease characterized by increasing susceptibility to fractures. The current study was conducted to assess the awareness about osteoporosis among the general population in the Northern Border region of Saudi Arabia to improve awareness and proper planning for public awareness about osteoporosis. METHODS: The study was conducted as a cross-sectional survey study, based on the online distribution of the Arabic-translated Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool (OKAT). The questionnaire questions cover the demographic characteristics of the participants, as well as symptoms, risk factors, prevention, and knowledge of treatment centers for osteoporosis in Saudi Arabia. RESULTS: 395 participants were enrolled in the study after their informed consenting. After scoring all correct answers for each participant, the mean score of all participants' answers was 12.5±3.4 (range 0-19). Participants with poor knowledge (0-7 scores), moderate knowledge (8-13 scores), and good knowledge (13-20 scores) represent 61 (15.4%), 213 (53.9%), and 121 (30.6%), respectively. The mean percentage of right answers to all the questions is 44.1%. The highest awareness level was shown in the area of osteoporosis symptoms and risk of fractures, while the lowest was recorded in the questions covering the risk factors. Ages, genders, jobs, and levels of education significantly affected the participants' levels of awareness. CONCLUSION: The public awareness among the population in the Northern Border region about osteoporosis is less than satisfactory. More awareness activities targeting the risky groups should be planned especially in the area of risk factors and preventive measures for osteoporosis.
